Colorado, the Centennial State, ranks 8th in the most recent America’s Health Rankings. Overall the state does well in most categories, but still fares poorly in several categories: high incidence of pertussis (46th); and, prevalence of low birthweight (40th). The number of children living in poverty has increased 23% in the past year. The state has almost 5.4 million residents, with over 10% of the population uninsured. The average cost of an inpatient hospital stay before insurance is $2,250 per day based on 2014 data, according to The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. Colorado had health care expenditures totaling more than $30 billion in 2009. The state has 82 hospitals and 44 HMO groups with a total membership numbering well over 835,000 individuals.
